John Tory is the new mayor of Toronto

John Tory is the new mayor of Toronto. The former leader of the provincial PC party carried a big lead in advance polls heading into the election. Tory ran for mayor in 2003, ultimately losing to David Miller, but ran an airtight campaign this time around, avoiding major platform controversies on his way towards victory in the mayoral race.

Early polls put Doug Ford and Tory close, but the CBC made the call on the victory as of 8:25pm. CP24 has also called the victory. The numbers still look close at time of publication, but as more and more polls report, the networks have decided that Tory's lead is insurmountable.

As of 9:15pm the breakdown of votes is: Tory 393,593; Ford 329,934; Chow 225, 338. That's far closer than many thought the race would be. Ford is about to take the stage for a concession speech.
