5-11 covid vaccine ontario

How and when to book COVID vaccine appointments in Ontario for kids 5 - 11

Ontario has just announced that you can book the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids five to 11 starting Nov. 23.

Vaccines started to arrive at the Hamilton airport over the weekend so with Health Canada's approval of the vaccine last week we're now getting closer to hitting the target of shots being administered to kids starting this Thursday.

Here's how the Ontario government announced this will work.

When can you book the COVID-19 vaccine for kids under 12?

The Ontario government says children aged five to 11 will be eligible to have their appointments booked to receive the vaccine beginning Tuesday, Nov.23, 2021. The booking system will open at 8 a.m.

How can you book the appointment?

You can schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment through a variety of channels including the COVID-19 vaccination portal and contact centre, directly through public health units using their own booking system, participating pharmacies which individuals can find on Ontario's website using the pharmacy locator, and select primary care providers.

Bookings for the immunization clinics in Toronto can also be done online.

What is the age cut-off?

To book an appointment online, children must be turning five years old by the end of 2021 (born in 2016).

How much vaccine supply is there for kids?

Ontario is expected to receive 1,076,000 doses of the paediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine from the federal government, which will then be immediately distributed to public health units, pharmacies, and primary care settings across the province.

When will appointments begin for kids?

Appointments across the province are expected to begin as early as Nov. 25 when the federal supply arrives at vaccine clinics across the province.

What is the kids vaccine exactly?

Kids will receive the paediatric Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine which is a slightly modified, lower dose (one-third the amount given to individuals aged 12 and over), in a two-dose series at a recommended interval of eight weeks between first and second doses.

What consent is necessary to get the vaccine?

Parents or caregivers of children aged five to 11 will usually have to provide consent on behalf of the child before or at the time of the appointment.

Who do you ask if you have questions?

Parents, caregivers and children are encouraged to call the Provincial Vaccine Confidence Line that can be accessed by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900, or visit COVID-19 Vaccine Consult Service to book a confidential phone appointment with a SickKids clinician.
