Polaris Prize Shortlist Toronto

Toronto shows well on 2012 Polaris Prize shortlist

Another year, and another Polaris Music Prize short list has been revealed! Broadcasters, bloggers, promoters and other music industry types crowded into The Drake Hotel lounge to hear the announcement and well, to eat poutine and pulled pork. Down from 40 nominees on the long list to just 10, this annual selection by a revolving jury of Canadian music journalists and broadcasters has us wondering who you thought they missed?

Here are the Toronto artists who made the cut:

Feist
Her second shortlist nomination after 2007's The Reminder, Metals is a departure from the former hook-laden album. Do you think this more folk-driven sound has a chance at the big prize?

Cold Specks
A relative newcomer, Cold Specks (Al Spx) has been met with much critical acclaim, especially across the pond. Her deeply soulful sound sets her apart from the rest of the nominees, which might prove seductive to judges who have tended to favour so-called underdogs (with the obvious exception of last year).

Fucked Up
The hardcore punk band won the Polaris Prize in 2009 to the surprise and joy of many. Will they become the first two-time winners on the back of David Comes To Life? I wouldn't bet against them.

Drake
Drake is a star as big as they come. Were he to win, you bet there'd be at least a little controversy, so let's just go out on a limb and say he won't. No hip hop artist has taken home the Polaris before, so despite the fact that Take Care has been generally well received by critics, it's a long shot to win.

FULL SHORTLIST OF NOMINEES

I would've loved to have seen Rich Aucoin make the list as well as Bry Webb.

Who do you think should've been included on the short list?
