The Hedrons Bring Glasgow Girl Punk to Toronto

It's almost midnight on Sunday at The Boat in Kensington Market, so I'm not surprised at the small crowd. The Hedrons don't seem to mind, showing us how four Glaswegian girls can rock out, regardless of the size of venue or audience.

The night before, the band played to thousands at Scene Bell, in the amphitheatre at the Quebec City Summer Festival, opening for Alexisonfire and Billy Talent.

Lead singer Tippi is chatty, casually introducing songs from the band's debut album One More Won't Kill Us before tearing into a Ramones-like romp.

Towards the end of an almost hour-long set, Tippi breaks into the crowd, bringing her youthful energy and angst even closer, rewarding the 30 or so in attendance.

After back-to-back UK Top 5 indie singles chart success, you ought to catch them at a small venue here while you can. The Hedrons play a free show tonight at The Horseshoe as part of The Edge 102.1 DAVE BOOKMAN'S NU MUSIC NITE.

After the gig I'm invited to follow the band to Club 751 on Queen St. West, where they're DJing alongside Anna Von Frances and Anna Cyzon, but I give it a pass. Part of me says "Hey! Ho! Let's Go!" But it's already after 1am on a Sunday night. These girls really know how to rock!
