Broken Social Scene

I sat down and listened to the new (self titled) album from Broken Social Scene yesterday afternoon and thought it was excellent. It's managed to incorporate an even greater array of different styles and moods than they managed on their last album, You Forgot It In People.

I guess this is a reflection of the diverse people that make up the collective.

There's strong elements of folk, psychedelic rock, electronica and soul along with many other influences as well. Even within a track the mood will often fluctuate; sparse melodies will suddenly burst into chaotic layers of noise.

None of the album comes across as disjointed though. It's more like a loose dream, bound together through the most part by energetic krautrock like rhythms.

I hope the album sees the group go on to even bigger things.
