Morning Brew: Boxing Day madness, ten reasons to be optimistic about Toronto, Regent Park gets artsy, delayed Air India flight to take off and Raptors win
Of course most of you know this already, but Boxing Day was pretty bananas. From epically long line-ups everywhere to rumours that people were even selling off their parking spots at Yorkdale Mall, the day after Christmas was bonkers as usual. Shoppers at Yorkdale, which tallied to be about 100,000 of them, were even forced to park on residential streets and walk 20 minutes to the shopping centre (now that's dedication!). I guess 50-60 per cent sales make all the craziness worth it, right?
If you're feeling a little down about Toronto going into the new year, The Star's Christopher Hume lists his top 10 reasons to actually feel optimistic about our city. He includes CBC Radio, Occupy Toronto (because we were the most polite) and the Waterfront (because people are paying attention to a process that's been developing for over a decade).
Regent Park is about to get artsy with dancer Laurence Lemieux's two-year project of turning a decrepit Salvation Army Citadel on Parliament Street into the new headquarters for her contemporary dance company. The new 60-seat venue, which cost $1.8-million, is intended to give Torontonians more arts-related options, especially for those east of downtown.
An Air India flight to New Delhi, which was delayed here for three days over the holidays, is to finally take flight (maybe). Though most of its 349 passengers were rightfully frustrated at the delay, some customers took the delay as an opportunity to take in typical Toronto sites over Christmas, like skating at Nathan Phillips Square. There was no clear information given by the airline for the delay.
