Morning Brew: TTC sets single day ridership record, Rob Ford accused of driving and dialing again, Mammo wants the province of Toronto, new radio station, and a late poll has the Liberals with a lock on the 416
Were you riding the TTC on September 15? Chances are, you were. That day, the TTC saw a record 1.71 million single rides. It's the fifth time this year that last year's old record of 1.68 million was beaten. As for the explanation behind the rush? Well, it wasn't snowing nor was it unbearably hot, so the TTC is chalking it up to their "level of service." Uh, probably not. I'm going to go with: because we have basically no other choice.
Well, so much for setting a good example. Two months after Rob Ford admitted to dialing and driving, it seems our mayor was caught again in the act. A semi-retired business owner says she spotted Ford talking on his cell phone while driving on Monday afternoon near Dundas and Spadina. The mayor's office did not deny he was talking on his cell phone at that time, but couldn't confirm he was driving.
The province of...Toronto? That's what councillor Giorgio Mammoliti sincerely suggested yesterday. Of course a harebrained idea like this one comes as no surprise from a councillor who's known for rhyming off, uh, unique ideas. Mammoliti 'reasons' the city is continually "stiffed" by both the provincial and federal government and it's time to take matters into our own hands.
It looks like Police Chief Bill Blair might get his way after all. A special meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board will meet to discuss the 2012 budget and if the board cannot find inefficiencies and make the necessary 10 per cent savings, then the force might be given a reprieve from the city.
If you feel some groove has been missing from the airwaves, then you might want to turn on CKFG 98.7, Toronto's second-ever black-owned radio station, which launched yesterday. "G 98.7: The Way We Groove" promises an eclectic mix of jazz, R&B, reggae and hip-hop (think Marvin Gaye alongside Rihanna). There's high hopes for this station since FLOW sold-out to the kiddies.
