Morning Brew: Library closures back on the table, Ford outsourcing business card printing to his family business, the evolution of Toronto's goth culture scene, Argos beat Bombers, and Peggy Nash announces NDP leadership bid
This won't please Margaret Atwood, or any other bibliophile. Looks like the library closures could actually be a possibility now after the newly appointed Toronto Public Library board proposed shutting 38 of the city's 98 branches as a way of trimming the fat. Other suggestions include reducing the size of some branches, and going old school by taking out computers.
It seems Rob Ford will spare no expense when it comes to printing his and his staff's business cards. Especially when it's his family's printing company that's printing out the cards. Turns out that by outsourcing the printing of the cards to Deco Labels & Tags, taxpayers are paying up to four time as much per card than if the cards were printed by the city's in-house printing office. Hmm.
Toronto may be called Hogtown, but we're losing the Maple Leafs food processing plant, which announced its closure in the next few years. The news came last week, but since then, it's been all quiet on the eco-foodie-and-public-officials front, and NOW finds that odd.
The evolution of Toronto's goth culture scene is synonymous with the evolution of the culture scene on Queen Street West, at least according to the Grid's oral history on the subject.
