Morning Brew: TTC driver involved in crash could face charges, Blair says cutting budget will risk public safety, Doug Ford met with mall operator, $3.75 fine given to cyclist who hit pedestrian, and police investigate fraud at York University
The TTC bus driver involved in Tuesday's deadly crash could face charges after police found a "substance" that they're pretty sure is marijuana in the driver's duffel bag. The driver also refused to do a TTC drug test after the crash, which doesn't seem to bode well for his case. However, according to police, the driver didn't have any signs of that he might have smoked up at the time of the investigation. Police are meeting with Crown attorneys next week to discuss the possible charges.
Meeting the city's budget request or risking the city's safety? That's basically what it comes down to if Toronto police are to follow City Hall's request that all departments shave 10 per cent from their budget, according to Police Chief Bill Blair. The chief said he can't cut his budget by $83-million without laying off one-fifth of the department, which "would have a very significant impact on public safety and our ability to keep the city safe."
We shouldn't expect anything less. According to The Globe and Mail, which has obtained a preliminary sketch of Doug Ford's super secret designs of his waterfront vision, a huge mall will go where the Don River was supposed to flow, and also feature a small bit of parkland, you know, instead of that spacious urban park that Waterfront Toronto had planned. Also, Ford apparently met with some bigwig mall operator from Australia, but he denies his vision had anything to do with any company's plan.
What can $3.75 buy you? Not much these days, but it is the price a cyclist has to pay for striking a pedestrian down, who later died in hospital. That's a pretty low fine, but the incident happened in what used to be North York, which hasn't changed its fines since amalgamation. Guess it's time for that to be looked into, right?
Flying just got a whole suckier. Air Canada will start charging fees for checked luggage next month. And I don't mean for any extra luggage either - it's all luggage. The airline is going to charge $25 for one checked piece of luggage and $35 for a second. So looks like we're all going to stuff that carry-on piece pretty good.
