Bruno Capolongo La Dolce Vita

Feeding on Food Art

I recently made a trip to the AGO's Art Rental Gallery to check out the "Feed Your Soul" exhibition, which was launched last week. Food art? Sounds delicious to me. And the concept of renting art on a monthly basis? I like it. As they say, variety is the spice of life.

With 24 pieces on display covering painting, sculpture and photography there is something for every food (and art) lover.

A series called "Eye Candy" by artist Bruno Capolongo is so lifelike I started salivating.

On one wall stands a portrait of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton titled "Gum Blonde LVII". When I ask how this is food related, I'm told that it is made from chewed bubble gum. Artist Jason Kronenwald has an entire series of them, gum supplied by a loyal team of chewers (the artist does not chew himself).

A tongue-in-cheek piece by Charles Pachter pokes fun at our Canadian coffee icon by poking around the male anatomy in a piece titled "Timbits."

Jen Hutton Peanut Butter

And a sculpture by Jen Hutton called "Peanut Butter Jar" made me long for my childhood.

I came in with my soul feeling a little depleted, and left well fed on food art. And don't worry, no leaks here.

The "Feed Your Soul" exhibition is free, and on now until April 3rd at the AGO Art Rental and Sales Office (481 University Avenue at Dundas). Monday - Friday 11am-5pm, and every third Saturday of the month from 10am-3pm.
