New details about 16-year-old fatally stabbed at TTC subway station

Sixteen-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes died after being stabbed in a random and unprovoked attack at Keele subway station on Saturday night.

Additional information has since been revealed about the victim, including his passions and dreams for the future.

Gabriel's mother, Andrea Magalhaes, is a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital and told the Star that she did hear reports of a man who stabbed at the subway station, but she didn't believe the victim could be her son.

However, Andrea said she began to worry once Gabriel stopped answering her phone calls. She decided to leave the front door unlocked in case he forgot his key.

Eventually, detectives knocked at her door and informed her that Gabriel had been stabbed.

According to the Toronto Police Service (TPS), Magalhaes was stabbed just before 9 p.m., while sitting on a bench on the lower level of Keele subway station.

Paramedics were able to treat Gabriel at the station and rushed him to hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Jordan O'Brien-Tobin, a man who was experiencing homelessness and was charged with first-degree murder.

Andrea told the Star that her family moved to Toronto from Brazil in 2000. She described her son as a shy, sweet, hardworking boy who had a passion for math, and despite a learning disability, worked extremely hard in school.

Gabriel's mother also told the Star that he had a passion for snowboarding and went to Blue Mountain regularly during the winter season alongside his family.

Gabriel had goals to get his first job this upcoming summer as a lifeguard and had aspirations to study astrophysics at university.
