Morning Brew: October 14th, 2008

What's happening in the GTA:

It's election day, and it wouldn't be election day without an error or a few more scandals surfacing:
- Thousands of voters in the Eglinton-Lawrence area have mistakenly been instructed to cast their ballots into a hole in the ground.
- In Etobicoke Center, a judge had to be interrupted from eating turkey to impose a court injunction to stop the Conservative candidate Axel Kuhn from distributing what was deemed to be false, defamatory campaign literature.
- Even US filmmaker Michael Moore managed to get embroiled in campaign finger-pointing.

For those still on the fence and in need of a quick overview of the party platforms to help decide who to support, here are some half-decent election 2008 Cole's Notes and links.

In non-election news, unwanted records are being broken in Peel region. The 23rd homicide of 2008 further exceeds last year's record of 17. Sharp, upward trending like this is sure to sound some alarms, draw the attention of the media, and give 416ers one more reason to crap on the 905.

Beaten, genitals grabbed, illegally strip-searched, beaten and tasered, taken to hospital but deprived of medication prescribed, beaten and tasered again - these are the allegations a Mississauga man has made against police. But with a long rap sheet for drug and break and enter offences, he may have a hard time winning the $9million lawsuit he's filing.

It's looking like it wasn't a freak accident. Police suspect that a van carrying two young men, that was driven into lake Ontario at the foot of Bathurst and resulted in the drowning death of both men, was either a double-suicide or a murder-suicide.

Not all news from Thanksgiving weekend falls into the bad/sad category though. Over 1200 people were thankful for a free turkey dinner served by an Etobicoke restaurant.
