Idiotarod shopping cart race practice

An Idiot's Race in Kensington Market

Idiotarod takes the idea from Iditarod, the Alaskan long-distance dog sled race, and transforms it into an urban setting, replacing dogs and sleds with shopping carts and people. Sounds like a regular afternoon in Parkdale to me.

If you're not too busy getting ready to swing a pillow in Nathan Phillips Square Saturday afternoon, head over to Grange Park in just southeast of Kensington Market at 4 p.m. for some hijinks and tomfoolery. Or as the organizers put it, "Grab some idiots and a cart and have a good time."

The idea started in San Francisco in the mid-'90s and promises to be one of the most insane, er... inane spectator sports. Up to 15 teams will battle for Ultimate Idiot and prizes will be given for best costume. It's free to participate, but teams must register at least 20 minutes before the race. Check the FAQ for details.

Judging by some of the photos in the Facebook group, this event was a smashing success in New York City. Can The Big Smoke compete with The Big Apple?
