Tekko Opening Tonight

You either love art openings or you loathe them; probably for the same reasons. Hipster girls in stilettos and faux-Value Village sequined scoop necks talking to hipster boys in blazers and scarves and hard-to-maintain haircuts. Everyone packed in so thickly you can't even see the art. On a given night, depending on the price of the beer being offered and the work on the walls, I can fall into either camp.

There is an opening tonight that has piqued my interest however, the Tekko 4 exhibition at the DeLeon White Gallery (1096 Queen Street West). I've heard the beer will be cheap and the work on the walls will be really big. What's not to love?

The Tekko concept is interesting. They're a self-formed curatorial board that aims to showcase Canadian and international designers outside of commercial commissions. Their fourth annual exhibition, titled "Safety in Numbers", partners local, predominantly graphic, designers with international designers to produce pieces based on the given theme. The Safety in Numbers show has been mounted earlier this year in varying forms in Barcelona and Berlin and premieres tonight in Toronto. Don't forget your scarves and stilettos!
