Major League Gaming Brings the Gib-Fest to Toronto

Man, we need a video game specific category on blogTO...

Did you know that you can make actual cash from playing video games? And I'm not talking $8 an hour as a game tester(it sounds good on paper, but you're better off with filling your coffee mug with Javex); people make mad cheddar from twirling an analog nub. You can't make the mortgage payments from just playing at a few local LAN parties, though, you need to join the big leagues.

The Major League Gaming, err, league, to be specific. Announced earlier today, the MLG is branching out a bit and will be holding a huge event at the Direct Energy Centre on November 2nd of this year. Is Master Chief ready for world domination? Well, maybe kinda sorta...

--
25,000 people are expected to enjoy the Gaming and Digital Lifestyle Show that the MLG tournament is taking place within. That's a LOT of people, particularly for a show that seems to be entering its debut year. Running a search only yields other outlets breaking the news of the MLG's announcement.

If 25,000 people come to see a bunch of kids play Halo, I will be quite impressed. I personally can't stand watching people I don't play a game I'm not involved in, unless there are copious amounts of booze involved. If the MLG is listening, make that cheap booze. Factor in that just under 2000 people will be taking part in the event (if every registration spot gets filled for all four main tournaments), and you're talking about 23,000 people, watching other people have a good time; that's like asking people to buy a mix CD when they could make their own, filled with stuff they're guaranteed to like.

In the name of the almighty Miyamoto, however, I will stop being a Debbie Downer about it and assume that a gnarly time will be had by all, with the MLG, Toronto based Insight Sports and associated vendors and sponsors of the show raking in enough cash to warrant repeat visits. We might not be as crazy as those South Koreans, but Canada's got game... I know it's here somewhere.

My money's on DAM MadMax for the win, btw.
