Uplands - Golf on a budget

Not scared off by the heat and looking for something to do outside? Same here. Yesterday I played nine holes at the Uplands Golf Course. Did I drive out to Orangeville? Maybe Burlington? Nope. Uplands is a quick run just north of the border (Steeles) off Yonge Street. Not only is it fairly accessible, its affordable too. My greens fee and pull cart came to just 27 bucks. If it's not crazy busy, you can play your round in about two hours, plus if you want to stick around and play 18, there's a generous discount.

The course is a mix of heavy, wooded areas and a long, hilly terrain with deep valleys in the fairways. There really isn't a lot of water to contend with; just a few streams here and there. The hills can make for a tough walk and the ups and downs of the paths can turn your cart ride into an interesting roller coaster experience.

Their signature hole is the famed eighth, which must have been designed so that as you reach the tee box, you take one look out ahead and mutter, "holy shit". The eighth is a 232 yard par 3 that starts on an elevated tee, runs through a narrow opening of trees and ends with an elevated green. Golf Magazine has rated it one of the 500 best holes in the world. If you birdie this one, there's a good chance your name is Tiger Woods.

On the weekends, Uplands offers nine holes, a power cart and a steak dinner for $40. Add a beer or two in the fairway and it's still one of the best deals around.

To book a tee time call (905) 889-3291.

For those still curious, I shot a 43.
