Hefty fine in the works for Toronto cigarette butt litterers
If a private member's bill goes through, Torontonians caught butting out in the wrong place could face a $3,000 fine. On the bright side, a new potential source of transit funding has just been discovered.
Dave Levac, the Brant Liberal MPP, introduced the bill that would see minimum fines under the Environment Protection Act rise from $1,000 to $2,000, and maximum fines rise from $2,000 to $3,000. But according to the Toronto Star, the bill won't be on the docket until next year.
"We want to make sure that people understand that a cigarette, a cigar, or whatever, that's littering," Levac said. "(The increased fine) sends the signal that we mean business."
