The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Under Control

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. It's meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local artists.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: The Effens, "Saint Vitus's Dance"

After a little bit of research, I discovered that Saint Vitus is the patron saint of entertainment, which means you can now indulge in The Effens' "Saint Vitus's Dance" - off their free Ditch Ditch EP - sacrilege-free.

Track #2: PS I Love You, "Where's The Party"

PS I Love You covers Madonna, giving her song a grungy tone that glides on helium hooks and vocals. Obviously, the party's in this track.

Track #3: The Box Tiger, "The Ballad of My Bones"

The Box Tiger holds no restraints in "The Ballad of My Bones", a momentous track where Sonia Sturino's lung-bursting vocals emerge from harmonic hysteria.

Track #4: The Hoa Hoa's, "Falling in Love is for Young People"

The Hoa's Hoa's "Falling in Love is for Young People" is a psychedelic cathedral, comprised of tropical vocals and shuffling shakers, and thanks to the kind folks at Optical Sounds I get to share it with you.

Track #5: Teenage Kicks, "Hearts of Darkness"

Have you grabbed your free copy of Teenage Kicks' Rational Anthems EP? Because I know after you hear "Hearts of Darkness" - a vintage-sounding classic rock souvenir - you'll want to hear the rest.
