Mu at 99 Sudbury

After seeing half of Mu Friday night at 99 Sudbury (this warehouse party space at the bottom of Lisgar street), I am considering writing a definition for "stage presence" on wikipedia, with a large photo of vocalist Mutsumi Kanamori.

Without producer-dj legend-husband Maurice Fulton, and just a cd, Mutsumi danced, flexed, kicked and spasmed through a short but feverish set. In braiding and unbraiding her hair, "vogue" posing, and pretending to powder her sweaty face, she expressed an appealing love/hate relationship with the role of the female musician. This was especially effective during "Paris Hilton", an ode to the hated heir who seems to be famous for close to nothing.

What was interesting was to discover that ravers still exist in Toronto. The party scene isn't dead yet, they've just adapted to the newer electro sounds. Mu didn't go on until 2:30 or so, so when we got there at 12:30, there was nobody there. It reminded me of when I was in grade 9 and I was exploring the rave scene, but I had a curfew, so I only ever experienced the really boring beginnings of raves. Really fun dance party ensued until god knows what time, because I dragged my sleepy head home right after the show.
