World Poutine Eating Championship

World Poutine Eating Championship returns to Toronto

The most Canadian of eating contests is set to return to Toronto for its second year. The subject of loads of press when it debuted in May 2010, the World Poutine Eating Championship can now boast annual status as Smoke's Poutinerie once again seeks to find out who can stomach the most poutine in a 10 minute period. I'll take a leap and say that it'll be a tall order to top last year's winning number of 13 pounds (yes, that's 13 not 1.3), set by Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti.

New for this year is an amateur competition, which will precede the professional poutine pig-out. Those eager to show off just how much they can stretch their esophagus will, however, have to convince organizers of their suitability via a competitive process (basically you just need to show why it would be entertaining to watch you devour heaps of gravy and cheese curds). There's also been a change of venue for the 2011 event. Instead of BMO Field, the competition will now take place outside Gate 11 at the Roger's Centre prior to an Argos game, for which there will be many tickets given away over the course of the festivities. And to think, Americans claim we don't know how to tailgate.

The 2nd Annual World Poutine Eating Competition takes place September 24, 2011. For details, check out the event webpage.
