time lapse sunset toronto

Night falls on Toronto (cool time-lapse videos)

If there's such a thing as a natural subject for time-lapse photography, the transition from day to night - particularly in urban settings - would probably take the cake. Watching the sun set as the city lights come up is compelling to begin with, but when you speed the whole thing up it takes on a whole other dimension. Perhaps this is some manifestation of our collective lack of patience, but I suspect that the main reason videos like these are so popular is because they capture something that's familiar but present it back in a manner that's wholly unfamiliar and thus engaging. In this sense, the sunset time-lapse might be the ur-example of this genre of photography.

Here's a few recent ones that have made it onto my radar, with a couple of favourites thrown in for good measure. Lead photo by Sam Javanrouh.
