They're funny that way

LGBT comedy fest, "We're Funny That Way", has kicked off the comedy festival season here in Toronto this week. Performances began on Monday and as we near the weekend, some hilarious acts are prepping to take the stage.

Bad timing reigns for me, as with my best friend's b-day party happening tonight I'm going to miss the Thursday night line up. Don't let the same happen to you! (jk) "Me Love You Long Time", takes the Chamber stage at 9:30 is going to be a great (and probably crass) show - I guarantee...

If you have ever found yourself cracking Margaret Cho jokes to your friends at work, Kate Riggs & Lyris Hung (aka Slanty Eyed Mama)and their act "Me Love You Long Time" is just the ticket for you.

I first came across Kate when I was livin' in NY for a while. Walking through Bryant Park's pre-pride events, there was this woman cracking jokes on stage with her air-guitar playing male friend who was dressed up in traditional Chinese getup.

The crowd was huge and I didn't plan to hang around til turning to leave I hear her scream something about how lame it was to have grown up in Alberta or something. A Canadian comedian in NY? No surprise - still, a reason to stop for a bit.

Her mix of political spoken word, impressions, satirical rap, and straight up stand-up was hilarious. After toppling over with laughter at a live rendition of her tune, "Rice Rice Baby" I even ended up buying the EP of sorts she had for sale.

Now tonight, joined by Lyris Hung, she brings her comedy to The Chamber at 9:30pm. Tickets are $5 in advance by credit card at Buddies' box office or PWYC at the door! More info here.

Let me know how it goes!
