Aquarium Fiasco

It appears that Toronto is moving ahead with plans to create an aquarium at the foot of Dufferin Street. The city has begun accepting bids from developers to build a 75,000 to 150,000 foot aquarium between Ontario Place and Exhibition Place. Seems some people think an aquarium is what Toronto's waterfront is missing and that it will bring in some much needed tourism dollars.

More likely is that this will be yet another failed initiative. If the economics of this thing don't kill it, environmentalists are sure to raise the issue that a captive animal facility should be opposed on ethical grounds. I agree. Environmental concerns aside, the fact is that the size and scope of this plan essentially prohibits the aquarium from being anywhere close to world-class. Let's hope forward thinking Torontonians - David Miller included - come to their senses and kill this for good.
