The TTC is eerily quiet today

Nurses, firefighters, police officers, power technicians, doctors and anyone else who absolutely needs to be at their place of work today, I salute you.

Everyone else is working from home, it seems (or not at all, in the case of most students) as a winter storm hammers Ontario with tons of snow, dangerous winds and potentially freezing rain.

Even before the snowstorm hit Toronto on Tuesday morning, TTC officials were warning of potential delays and cancellations.

"Please make sure you allow for extra time to commute," wrote the transit agency around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. "With significant snowfall on the way, service may be slower than usual. We are working to get you to your destinations safely and as quickly as the weather allows."

Indeed, service is all kinds of messed up. Buses aren't stopping in certain parts of the city due to icy road conditions and motorists are acting a fool, as they do.

That said, service is running much better than expected for those who dared to rely on it this blustery winter morning.

Students have the day off at most area elementary schools, high schools and post-secondary institutions, which may account for at least some of the roominess on TTC vehicles right now.

Many daily commuters are also missing in action from their usual routes.

Stations are so quiet it's freaking people out.

And the space...

Oh the space!

For the first time in what might be ever, passengers are able to bring sports equipment aboard the streetcar with them around 9 a.m.

People are actually sitting down and eating breakfast. During rush hour. On the TTC.

There have been no complaints of platform overcrowding today so far.

In fact, passengers say they're getting to their destinations earlier than usual on account of atypically low ridership.

The best part? Everybody gets it.

We've all been there and done that, so what's the point of trying?... Aside from maybe getting lucky like those brave souls who hopped aboard public transit this morning.

Let's hope everything goes just as smoothly tonight.
