Pest control complaints skyrocket at Toronto restaurants

You might get more than what you ordered at Toronto restaurants this summer. That's because compared to the first six months of 2015, as the Toronto Star reports today, Toronto Public Health has seen the number of rat, or rodent-related complaints increase by 50 per cent.

Some attribute this boom to our mild winter, which might have allowed the rat population grow. Others are more skeptical and think the proliferation of smartphones now makes it easier for patrons to submit these types of complaints.

Whatever the reason, the TPH has received 113 complaints about rodents in restaurants so far this year - 37 more than at this time in 2015.

One pest control professional tells the Star that he get the most calls from restaurants in busy areas, notably around St. Clair and Bloor Street.

And if you're curious to see which restaurants eventually get dinged for pest control violations, check back here on Monday when we release our weekly DineSafe round up.
