Amber Alerts in Ontario will now start showing up in your Instagram feed

Instagram is officially launching in-app Amber Alerts on its platform in 25 countries, including Canada.

Instagram announced on June 1 it would begin to roll out the feature over the coming weeks.

The alerts are specific to the search area, so if you get one on your feed that means there's an active search for a missing child nearby.

The alert will include a description about the missing child, the location of abduction, as well as their photo.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said traditional Amber Alert texts usually don't include a photo, which is something Instagram is adding in their new in-app feature.

You can also share the Amber Alert with friends through the app in order to further spread the word.

Facebook introduced a similar feature back in 2015, and so far it's been rather successful.

In 2020, Amanda Disley and her husband helped rescue an 11 year-old child after seeing an Amber Alert on Facebook.

Other countries receiving the new feature include: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Greece, Guatemala, Ireland, Jamaica, Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, South Africa, Taiwan, Ukraine, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and the US.
