Opening Soon: Siouxsie Collins, Delica Kitchen, Lil' Bean N' Green, Spinners Sandwich Co., Lady Mosquito, Luci Restaurant
Even with a moratorium in place preventing any new bars, cafes or restaurants in the area, Ossington is about to get a new watering hole. Siouxie Collins, from the owners of LeVack Block who applied for its liquor license before the new rules went into effect, has been under construction for some time but was getting its windows washed yesterday when I passed by. I peeked inside and everything looked just about ready to go so expect the newspapers to come down any day now.
Delica Kitchen, at Yonge south of St. Clair, is working toward a highly anticipated opening later this Fall. The take-out restaurant will be cooking up fresh, healthy natural meals made, where possible, from local ingredients. Owner Devin Connell should be able to make it work with plenty of food industry experience in the bloodlines (her family started Ace Bakery).
A few steps north, Spinners Sandwich Co. will be serving up higher calorie and more carnivore-friendly fare. Gyros, shawarma and donair are what's on the menu as well as sides like fresh cut fries and caesar salad.
Construction is well under way at Lil' Bean N' Green in Leslieville. This kid-focused cafe is expected to open by the end of the month. Looks to be a more hip version of the Junction's Gingerbread House Family Cafe.
On Queen between Brookfield and Ossington, Lady Mosquito has posted a sign in the window signaling this block will become much more fashionable. The company, which currently sells its product online and at Purple Thumb in the Beaches, specializes in jewelery, bags and other design accessories from Peru. Opening day is slated for late September.
Finally, on the East Danforth, Luci Restaurant is the latest business opening here which may signal impending gentrification of the neighbourhood. Details are scant except for a small sign on the front window announcing its future arrival in the space formally home to the creole themed Safari Village.
