Morning Brew: Two more explosive devices found in Amazing Party Store, yesterday's police chase was hypnotic, executive committee to vote on partial sale of Toronto Hydro, CN Tower builder does Edgewalk, and another math lesson for Rob Ford
What is up with the Amazing Party Store? As reported yesterday, three explosive devices were discovered by police over the weekend at the Etobicoke costume store. Then last night, a fourth suspicious package was found, though it's not known if the package was planted on Monday or if it had been there the whole time. Now comes word this morning from the Star that a fifth package has been found. The proprietor believes a competitor may be responsible for the packages. First Gold Wars, and now Party Wars? Toronto's got the best wars ever.
So did you watch the big police chase yesterday? Though the runaway tractor tailer chase on the QEW lasted a little longer than Kim Kardashian's marriage, the Post's Peter Kuitenbrouwer called it "hypnotic", likening it to the O.J. Simpson's infamous white Bronco high-speed chase, though the truck driver probably won't score a book deal out of it.
The executive committee is set to take its first vote on whether or not to sell a 10 per cent stake in Toronto Hydro. If it goes through, the sale would apparently generate $600 million, which would help ease the current debt load. Councillor Adam Vaughan is skeptical. "I don't take anything at face value when it comes to this mayor. So when he says selling a good thing to do, he's got to prove it," he said.
This is pretty cool. 84 year old Henry Battah, a former iron worker who helped build the CN Tower, returned to the top of the structure to â what else â do the EdgeWalk. Battah was surprisingly nervous even though a 1972 Toronto Star photo shows him straddling a beam 300 metres above the city without a harness. This time, he was strapped in but he didn't care much for the jumpsuit, saying: "Can't do nothing with this on, can't even chase women."
