Morning Brew: Ryerson expected to announce title sponsor for Gardens on Tuesday, AGO and TDSB team up to give kids free art, truck side guards to go to city council, Mammoliti thinks massage parlours are also opium dens, and the Leafs beat the Ducks
Just as Loblaws is set to open their new store in Maple Leaf Gardens this week, Ryerson University is set to reveal some news of their own regarding their share of the building. The university has plans to make a special announcement on Tuesday, which have many speculating they will reveal the title sponsor for their student athletic facilities, which includes a hockey arena.
Toronto school kids will be getting up-close-and-personal with art as the Toronto District School Board teams with the AGO for a unique educational partnership that will see more than 250,000 students and teachers gain free access to the gallery's learning wing, in addition to giving the chance for students to view TDSB-owned art that used to kept in a school basement.
The issue of side guards on trucks is now headed to city council. Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker will present a motion on Tuesday asking council to look into fitting all city-operated trucks with side guards, as well as proposing a policy under which the city would favour doing business with corporations that used the safety measure. It's a change of direction for De Baeremaeker, who did not take any action on side guards when a similar motion was presented in 2006 while he was chair of the public works committee. A decision he calls a "mistake."
Alleged opium and heroin dens are running amuck in our city's illegal and holistic massage parlours and brothels, and councillor Giorgio Mammoliti wants to put a stop to it. The drugs are apparently being illegally bought and smoked at parlours that are licensed by the city, and Mammoliti wants those licenses revoked. Mammoliti also said police officers are wasting their time patrolling strip clubs when they should be searching massage parlours. Police say they're not aware of an increase in heroin dens. Mammoliti sure has a hankering to get rid of those parlours, doesn't he?
