Morning Brew: Mammoliti's plan to balance the budget, Trump Tower says no to PATH, U of T linguist says true Canadian speakers live up north, Ontario leaders' debate predictable, Leafs look decent in pre-season play
Toronto City Council has voted in favour of cutting roughly $27-million in services and programs, including the sale of the Toronto Zoo and three city-run theatres, as well as paid police officers at construction sites. Obviously that leaves a hell of a lot left to be done should it hope to balance the 2012 budget. As for how the city will recoup the remaining $600-million or so, councillor Giorgio Mammoliti says he knows how to solve it: Laying off 7,000 workers.
As if the new Trump Tower didn't already stick out like a sore thumb (according to Chris Hume, as you'll recall) but now the hotel doesn't want to get in on the PATH, Toronto's network of underground tunnel. The hotel is worried they won't ever see their guests; my bet is they're afraid of the common riffraff finding their way inside.
Think you're being true Canadian? Think again. A University of Toronto linguist says it's the northern Ontarians (the ones who live way up north, like in North Bay and Timmins) who are speaking true Canadian. You know, with their "chesterfield" and "rassle" and "you want to go for a coffee, there?" Yeah, I know. Weird.
The general consensus is that there was no big winner (or loser) at the Ontario leaders' debate. In fact, with the exception of a few heated moments, it was pretty much an exercise in sound bites, which I suppose is often the case with these things. It was, however, sad to see how little Toronto factored into the discourse last night.
