Morning Brew: Rob Ford likely to break "no layoffs" campaign promise, taxi cab ripped off drunk riders, Hazel gives a big fish to the mayor, good samaritans tackle armed robber, Sharapova upset at Rogers Cup
Looks like Rob Ford's campaign promise of "no need for layoffs" to fix Toronto's financial problems is getting the pink slip itself. Ford's administration and senior city managers now believe lay-offs for a significant number of city staff are inevitable. Last month, a number of "early retirement" packages were offered to avoid this course of action, but the number of members who'll participate are estimated to be very low. Some believe the pink slip talk is a tactic of the city's to have more people take the severance packages.
Taking a cab after a late-night drinking session? Well, you might want to pay cash. Toronto police say a licensed taxi driver targeted drunken party revellers in the Entertainment district and took their debit and credit card info and PIN numbers. Police say riders didn't realize their info had been recorded until after they were dropped off (or probably the next morning after a nice hangover breakfast).
Maybe Hazel McCallion was jealous when she heard Rob Ford was swapping fishing stories with the Prime Minister. Whatever the reason, the Mississauga mayor stopped by Ford's office yesterday to drop off the 18.5-pound chinook salmon she caught at a salmon derby. "He'll have a good dinner tonight," she said. (And she's 90 years old, people. 90!).
Well, it is known as Toronto the Good, so that must mean we've got some good eggs out there â like the peeps who tackled an armed robber near Jane and Sheppard yesterday. A woman with an automatic weapon robbed a store of thousands of dollars before she was restrained by the samaritans, who were as good as they were gutsy.
