Morning Brew: Lots of violations for pools and spas across the city, Irish ex-pats looking for work in Toronto, strike deadline approaches for provincial college workers, streetcar derailment cause still unknown, and polling exposes holes in Elections Act
It's going to be a warm weekend, but before you jump in that hotel/club/condo/school swimming pool, you should take heed. The Star obtained public health data that outlines 10,000 violations by city pools and spas over the last two years. The list includes Yorkville Stillwater Spa, Branksome Hall (an all-girls private school) and Extreme Fitness, with over 120 violations at two of its locations. And beware of those hot tubs too.
There's been a steady stream of Irish ex-pats looking for work in Toronto lately. Most of the work being sought is in trades, like carpentry, and it's been so steady that the Irish government last week set up an immigrant services centre at the Ireland Fund of Canada's downtown offices to help with job assistance, housing and visas. Strapping Irishmen who are good with their hands, walking the streets of Toronto? I don't think a lot of women will be complaining about that.
A strike deadline is approaching for more than eight thousand support workers at colleges across the province. The Ontario Public Service Union says if a collective agreement isn't reached by the deadline, the workers could walk off the job September 1, jeopardizing the start of school - something I think some students wouldn't have a problem with.
The cause of Friday's streetcar derailment is still undetermined. Yesterday, a streetcar derailed at College Street and Spadina Avenue as it attempted to turn north onto Spadina from College. Traffic was held up for several hours as crews used massive equipment to life the car back onto the tracks. No injuries were reported.
