Morning Brew: Atwood not running for mayor yet, Ford has Harper for dinner, glass falls from TIFF Lightbox, Toronto Zoo puts down lioness, new Dupont mural
After some writing time in the woods, Margaret Atwood is back in the city and responding to the "twin Ford(mayors)" again. In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Atwood warns that Doug Ford's ignoramus comments are ruining the city's reputation as an "artists welcome" city. And though she questions the city's sense of democracy, she's not running for mayor "yet" (much to chagrin of her popular Facebook page), but she is thinking of drawing a cartoon of the Ford brothers or knitting a likeness of Rob Ford, which I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to be a voodoo doll.
The mayor had one heck of a shindig at his home last night, one that included Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Hosted by by MPs Patrick Brown and Kellie Leitch, the dinner was in honour of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty for "helping make Toronto and Central Ontario Conservative Blue". Remember when Ford initially said he wasn't choosing sides in the federal election? Anyway. I'm sure the food was outstanding.
No, the sky isn't falling; it's just more glass. John Street is the city's second street to close this week after glass fell from the Festival Tower atop of the TIFF Lightbox last night. Thankfully no one was injured.
The Toronto Zoo had to put down its first and only white lioness yesterday after it was discovered she had liver cancer. Nokanda came to the zoo from Philadelphia in 1995 after losing a friendly World Series bet and quickly became the 'mane' attraction at the zoo's African Savannah exhibit. She was 15.
A recent incident involving a young Toronto man who confronted an intruder at his girlfriend's home on Sunday is adding fuel to the nation's debate about self-defence and protection of property. The man, who stabbed the intruder, is now charged with aggravated assault, a crime punishable up to 14 years in prison.
