Morning Brew: Is Ford the mayor of fun?, MMVAs shut down Queen and John, Minnan-Wong thinks city grass is too tall, and the Jays lose to the Reds
According to the Star, our Mayor wants to bring back da funk. Right now, Toronto has rules against playing ball hockey in the street, cutting down trees in your backyard, having yard sales on the sidewalk, and even having helium balloons — and releasing them into the sky! — on city property. Ford wants to change some of these potentially pesky by-laws by getting rid of that pesky tree-cutting bylaw, the pet licensing law and of course, that 5-cent plastic bag tax, though particularly in the case of the latter, one wonders how that gets in the way of "fun."
For those who were around Queen and John yesterday and who are not 14 year girls--I'm sorry. Last night, the MuchMusic Video Awards basically shut down that whole area all day as fans got ready to see Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and other celebs perform and present at the star-studded event. Highlight of the night: Gaga ended her performance showered in purple goo. But, really, what else is new?
Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong thinks Toronto's grass has gotten out of hand and wants municipal officials to find a way to improve grass-cutting operations. Though Minnan-Wong concedes the wet weather has been "challenging" for cutting crews, he still thinks tall grass is unacceptable. He wants a report back by September about how the city can improve grass cutting.
And the headline of the weekend goes to... The Toronto Sun, whose story on hot dog vendors struggling to find work after being pushed off of a revitalized Bloor Street is topped with this gem: Hot dog vendor doesn't relish unemployment.
