Morning Brew: Don Cherry upsets councillors, UFC coming to town, Adam Nobody wants accountability, Ford and budget chief disagree when to cancel vehicle registration tax
As if Toronto doesn't have enough battles brewing in the city (hall), the Ultimate Fighting Championship is coming to town. UFC president Dana White announced that UFC 131 will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Rogers Centre. The card has yet to be finalized, and tickets will go on sale sometime in the new year. White said he expects UFC 131 will be the highest-profile event in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's history and will most likely feature many Canadian mixed-martial artists. Bring on the sweaty bods.
Left-wing councillors lashed out at Don Cherry after his divisive speech yesterday at City Hall. The remarks shocked many councillors who had invited their families to watch the ceremony. Councillor Gord Perks said. "[Ford] made a decision to put a particular person up to set the tone for the term of council and what a tone we got." Councillor Pam McConnell summed up the ceremony in a nutshell (no pun intended): "It was like bring on the clowns."
Last week, the face of the G20 protests accepted an apology from Chief Bill Blair. Now Adam Nobody wants to know if Toronto's top cop will seek out the police officers responsible for the beating he received from them. Police spokesman Mark Pugash said Tuesday, "If it's a Toronto officer, that officer will be held accountable," however he said from the YouTube video it was "impossible" to tell if the cop in question was apart of the Toronto police force. "Ultimately, people will judge the Toronto Police Service by the actions we take, not by hurling assumptions and comments," said Pugash. "The service and the chief are absolutely content to be judged by that."
