Morning Brew: U of T researchers track Chinese hackers, local celebrities going hungry, urban explorers arrested in sewers, City-run golf courses late to open, Jays blow season opener
Researchers from the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs have played a role in tracking the activities of a significant international Internet espionage ring based in China. Among classified documents that got into the hands of hackers were Canadian visa applications and documents related to the travel of NATO forces in Afghanistan. Maybe it's time Canada adopt an official policy strategy to deal with cyber security, eh?
A number of Torontonians -- including some famous authors, journalists, musicians and politicians -- will be eating meager when they take part in "Do The Math," an initiative by The Stop Community Food Centre. The stunt is part of an awareness campaign and an effort to pressure the province to introduce a monthly "Healthy Food Supplement" for all adults who on welfare.
A pair of urban explorers were arrested late on Sunday night and charged with "mischief to interfere with property" after making a foray into a series of underground sewers in the city's west end (something that is routine and deemed safe enough by them). Police, firefighters, and a Hazmat team were called in and spent several hours looking for the tandem before finally finding them and bringing them out. Should the city bother dedicating so many resources to find a couple of guys who actually want to be down there, and aren't causing any harm to anyone but (potentially) themselves?
Is someone on an extended vacation at the Globe and Mail, or are they phasing out their Ontario news page? While I'm used to normally seeing content added to it daily, the page hasn't been updated in a week. Perhaps most of the news is coming out of Toronto and lands on their Toronto page instead?
Privately-owned golf courses in Toronto and the GTA are open, and business is booming. But all four of the City-owned golf courses are still closed, with no indication that they'll be opening early despite a mild winter and the coming of lovely spring weather. started the 2010 MLB season with a disappointing blown-save loss to the Texas Rangers yesterday. Going into the 9th inning leading 4-3, closer Jason Frasor gave up four hits and two runs, allowing the Rangers to take game one of the three games series, which continues tomorrow. Home opener in Toronto is April 12th.
