Morning Brew: Province commits to Transit City, Canoe Landing Park finally opens, last-minute tax filing rush, Toronto paramedic on Time's most influential list, John Buck hits three homers, condo fire quickly extinguished
Transit City is a go, albeit slow. After cutting half of the initially promised funding, the province has now committed to fully backing Toronto's plan to develop a series of four LRT networks. But instead of an 8-year plan, it appears to be a 10-year plan, with funding spread out more than Mayor Miller hoped for. Emphasis will be put on completing the air-rail link, the Spadina subway extension, and the Sheppard LRT. And the remaining lines (Finch, Scarborough, Eglinton Crosstown) will be delayed.
The fences have finally come down and Canoe Landing Park is finally open to the public. After a premature "grand opening" back in September that lasted just one day, several months of legal hurdles prevented the City from actually opening the park to the public.
For the third year in a row, Torontonians are setting the bar when it comes to last-minute income tax filing. The deadline for filing 2009 taxes is midnight tonight, and it's a good idea to get yours in whether you think you owe or not. I would imagine the folks that offer tax services are going to have an insane day and many will be doing a late evening push to beat the deadline.
You've probably never heard of Toronto paramedic Rahul Singh, but he's been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine, joining the ranks of fellow award winners Bill Clinton, Lady Gaga, Steve Jobs, and more. How did he crack this list? He founded a volunteer-driven disaster relief organization called GlobalMedic back in 1998 and his team have responded to over 50 emergencies and counting, including the massive earthquake that rocked Haiti in January.
John Buck smacked three homers out of the park in a 6-3 win over Oakland, ending the Jays' five-game losing streak before a mere 10,721 fans at the dome. As long as the team continues to perform at a level that has them just barely flirting with .500, I can't see the attendance picking up much.
And in case you missed it, there was a dramatic fire on the roof of a high rise condo on Queen's Quay yesterday evening. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt, and the fire was quickly contained by fire crews. blogTO readers captured some great photos of the fire and the giant plume of smoke that drifted across the city and could be seen from tens of kilometers away.
