Picking your own fruits and vegetables in and around Toronto will give you a true farm-to-table food experience. By making a trip to a local farm, you're not only supporting the families that run them, you're treating yourself to bushels of homegrown goodness.
Here are some places to pick your own (PYO) fruits and vegetables near Toronto.
Visit Andrews' for a huge selection of pick-your-own fruits and veggies throughout the year. Start in May with rhubarb and asparagus and running all summer and fall long with PYO strawberries, blueberries, flowers, sweet corn, apples and gooseberries.
Strawberries and pumpkins are the specialities of this little market, with the berries ripe for picking during late June and July. The farm market officially opens June 10, and the picking – for which you need to register and reserve – will likely begin the third week of June.
Since 1977 they have been welcoming customers to their PYO fields. Their asparagus and rhubarb are available for picking as early as May, with prices starting at $11 for a 2-litre basketful. Other fruit and veggie options like strawberries, peas and potatoes are available in late June.
Less than an hour's drive out of the city you’ll find this picturesque farm near Caledon. Sunflowers are available for picking in August, followed by apples in September. The fall months will also include hazelnuts and pumpkin picking in October. You can register for updates and reservations on the site.
This farm is mostly known for its apple picking and its winery but Applewood is also open for PYO strawberry picking starting mid to late June. It costs $12 for admission, which includes a 2-litre basket to fill. BYO baskets are charged accordingly.
Visit this quaint apple orchard in Milton, Ontario. PYO apples will begin at the end of August, though it may be a little earlier this year, so be sure to stop by and stock up on all the fresh and crunchy apple goodness.
Take an hour's drive out of Toronto and you'll find this farm with a great selection of PYO fruit. Starting at the end of June, PYO berries will be available; you'll find strawberries, Saskatoon berries and raspberries.
This farm holds over 20 acres of blueberries that you can enjoy picking. The orchards will be open in August for blueberry season and you can even enjoy their in-house Appleberries Cafe, selling baked blueberry desserts. Prices start at $13.25 for 2 litres.
This local farm has been organic since 2001, growing their produce without pesticides, non-organic fertilizers or reliance on fossil fuels. PYO strawberries begin mid-June and apples are ready for picking by late August.
About an hour's drive out of the city you’ll find this picturesque orchard in Burlington. Apple picking will begin September 1 and you can take your pick from a huge selection of apples. Golden delicious, red delicious, Macintosh and mutsu apples are included in the lineup.
