Morning Brew: Torontonians just want to feel safe again after the G20, Ford's compliance audit complaintants retain impressive legal counsel, councillor wants another NHL team for the city, five year old creates video game sensation, and Jays lose
The first of three public meetings for the independent civilian review of the G20 was held last night at Metro Hall where many Torontonians pleaded that hey just want to feel safe again. About 50 people attended the review and spoke about how the summit had affected their lives. Now they want John Morden, the retired judge leading the Toronto Police Board's review, to get to the bottom of what happened during those two days last June and to find out who ordered what, calling on him to help restore confidence in our police officers. Two more public meetings are to be held on June 6 and June 13.
These guys aren't messing around. Toronto's Adam Chaleff-Freudenthaler and Max Reed, who have requested a compliance audit of Mayor Rob Ford's campaign funding, have now retained impressive legal counsel: Robert Centa, who was apart of the legal team representing the city in the 2002 Toronto computer leasing inquiry. Centa will provide pro bono legal advice as the dispute heads into the courts. The two complaintants sought Centa after Ford's lawyer appealed the compliance audit's committee to move ahead with a review of Ford's financing. No court date has been scheduled yet.
Looks like a Toronto councillor is trying to steal Winnipeg's thunder. Hot on the heels of the announcement that Winnipeg will be getting back their NHL team, councillor Josh Colle says Toronto needs another one. He's so serious that he's urging the city's development committee to write to the NHL and make it clear to them that we're in the running for another NHL team. Colle says another team would generate economic activity, tourism, jobs and revenue for the city. But I'm not sure Leafs fans would easily jump ship...or would they for the sake of a Stanley Cup?
What is wrong with people? Toronto police have arrested a man who's been accused of beating baby raccoons with a shovel. Turns out the little guys were wreaking havoc on his precious garden and so he decided to do something about it. Police were called yesterday morning by a neighbour on Rankin Crescent, near Symington Avenue and Bloor Street West. The man has been charged with cruelty to animals and possessing a dangerous weapon.
Think creating a video game is hard? Well, a five year old just did it over a single weekend so it can't be that hard, right? Toronto's Cassie Creighton created the game, Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure, and it's already went viral. You can check it out here. It's no Call of Duty, but its hand-drawn graphics of "ponycorns" are pretty cute.
