Special weather statement issued for Toronto with heavy rain and flooding on the way

After being graced with a beautifully sunny fall weekend, Toronto is in for a few gloomy days, weather-wise, starting with some heavy rainfall and potential flooding today.

According to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada early on Monday morning, the city will continue to be hit with rain throughout the day, which will at times get bad enough to reduce visibility and flood low lying areas.

"An additional 15 to 30 mm is expected for today, with total rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm expected as rain tapers off to showers early this evening," reads the alert, which was issued shortly after 5:30 a.m. after a night of precipitation.

"This rainfall is due to a low pressure system that is forecast to track northeast across southern Ontario on Monday."

All of southern Ontario is under a provincial and/or local flood watch as a result, with conservation authorities in many areas also issuing watershed conditions statements due to rising water levels, flows, slippery and unstable banks and generally hazardous conditions.

EnviroCan asks residents to ensure storm drains, etc. are clear of leaves and other fall debris to help with the flooding factor.

Unfortunately, the wet and chilly weather will persist for most of this week, with the federal weather agency forecasting at least a chance of showers on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as mostly overcast skies on Wednesday, although we will get brief reprieves of sun and double digit temps midweek to Thursday.

Monday is set to reach a high of only 9 C in the city, which currently feels more like a biting 4 C under dark and dreary skies, reminding us with a jolt of cold that our few precious months of hospitable climate are most definitely long over.
