head check

I keep seeing these people everywhere, and hearing the jingle on the radio. So, I finally went to the website to get my head checked. What did it tell me?

The first time I took the check-up I ended up just fine with a little smiley face telling me to get another head check in 6 months. Then, I noticed the word 'ever' in some of the questions, as in, 'have you EVER been sad every day for more than 2 weeks?' I ran through again and discovered I was probably clinically depressed as a teenager. But I mean, who isn't? So was it useful? Well, I don't feel the need to run to my doctor in a panic because of my teenage angst, but I read through the rest of the website and it did have some useful tips.

This awareness campaign has been going on at the same time as a close friend of mine confided that she's been depressed ever since her baby was born. Her baby is now one year old. So, I sent her to the site and it convinced her that crying alone every morning for a year is maybe a problem, and that there's more that can be done about it that try to suck it up and pretend there's nothing wrong. So in that sense it's a great way to help people get over that awful fear of being crazy which stops them from getting help. As for me, okay, maybe next time I'm depressed I won't chalk it up to hormones and wait 6 years to get over it.
