Are you dreaming of a more sustainable Toronto? Do you think it can be achieved with a block party dedicated to swapping clothes, shopping from environmentally-conscious vendors and learning tips on how to make your personal belongings last longer? If you're screaming "YASS!" then listen up!
This weekend is the time to dig into your drawers for your old clothes — or can we say, vintage finds? — and head on over to the Sustainable Block Party taking place in Toronto's Junction.
On August 23, the neighbourhood will host an event that's all about the various ways to celebrate, trade, and repair old goods. After all, a sustainable community is all about breathing life into second-hand items.
Event highlights include a Repair Café where you can mend and renew clothes, jewelry and small appliances; a Clothing Swap to refresh your wardrobe while cutting down on waste (both in the landfills and in your closet); and even an Electronic Recycling station to hand in those pieces of difficult-to-dispose-of tech, perfect for those old devices you've got quietly collecting dust.
Organizers are also hosting a crochet workshop that, according to their Instagram, is already sold out — proof that the community is eager to become more eco-friendly in more ways than one.
And, of course, no party is complete without food, drinks, and local artisans and vendors, so you can expect to have a variety of light bites and beverages available to indulge in, as well as stalls to shop at.
Drop by to trade, recycle, or just enjoy the good vibes, all knowing this block party is kind to both people and the planet.
The Sustainable Junction Block Party will take place at the George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre, located at 50 Sousa Mendes Street, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Note that registration for some aspects of the event, such as the Repair Café, is required.
