SATURDAY, JUNE 25TH

CULTURE | SUBSPACE "Inaugural Ball"
Tonight the Great Hall hosts an event brought to you by Subspace, an "Alt, Body-Mod & Fetish Club". If you enjoyed Torture Garden last month, you will fit right in here! The highlight of the evening will be a fashion showcase of Toxic Vision masterpieces that have been given the nod by some of LA's edgier celebs. There will be the usual Subspace features, such as a public play area, a dungeon zone, and of course DJs spinning until the wee hours.
The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West) 10PM $10

MUSIC | WOBBLE - TORONTO'S 1st INNER-CITY DUBSTEP FESTIVAL!
Hard to believe that this is the first dubstep fest here in TO! Venues like Wrongbar bring us 'bass culture' music regularly, but this is a focused musical affair... The name "Wobble" refers to the oscillating bass sounds associated with this South London born genre, but of course dubstep is all about that special rhythmic pattern, too! Tonight's event will feature a packed lineup of acts, including Mt. Eden, Adventure Club, Trypt, and many more.
Sound Academy (11 Polson Street) 8PM $26.50

FILM | Wildsound Short Film Festival - Best of SHORT FILMS around the world
Wildsound brings you a free short film festival tonight! This event is intended to be an audience-oriented festival, and will feature a full discussion period following the films. Six films, hailing from Canada, US, UK, Australia and Norway will be screened in three "acts". The final act will include a 70 minute feature. There will be a fully licensed bar, so the breaks will be a good opportunity to grab a fresh bevvy!
NFB Cinema (150 John Street) 7PM FREE

MUSIC | FOOTPRINTS: In Remembrance of GIL-SCOTT HERON
Gil-Scott Heron, well-known and widely celebrated poet and cultural figurehead, will be remembered tonight at this funky and soulful event at The Rivoli. Recently deceased, the Chicago-born Heron has been credited as one of hip hop's originators. The music for this event is promised to be made up of Heron's own tunes, cover versions, and artists that he influenced. DJs Stuart Li, Jason Palma, and General Electric will helm the sound system, and there will be some vintage GSH visuals as well.
The Rivoli (332 Queen Street West) $5 before 11pm

OTHER EVENTS ON OUR SATURDAY RADAR

SUNDAY, JUNE 26TH

MUSIC | Andreya Triana
Andreya Triana is an English singer/songwriter who has been making some waves in the UK since her appearance at the Glastonbury Festival a few years ago. She has collaborated with several notable artists, including Flying Lotus and Bonobo. Her own album, "Lost Where I Belong", was released last year on the very hip Ninja Tuna label, and has a sound ranging from a strong jazzy and 'dark' soul vibe to downtempo and trip hop sounds reminiscent of Morcheeba. This is a strong vocal talent worth checking out.
Wrongbar (1279 Queen Street West) 7PM $13.50

CULTURE | MothUP Toronto XIII -- "CANADIAN IDOLS"
MothUP is a monthly storytelling night in TO that features a theme unique to each event. Tonight's theme is "Canadian Idols". Participants will recount a short tale of meeting a famous Canadian, a brush with fame, notoriety, attempts at fame... Anything along those lines will do! Anyone can sign up, but the story you tell must fit the MothUP parameters, and must be true, and within the 5 to 7 minute range. The event will be taped, and uploaded to the MothUP Vimeo site.
No One Writes To The Colonel (460 College Street) 7:30PM FREE

MUSIC | NOBUNNY w/ The Pow Wows & Act Casual
Nobunny, aka. Justin Champlin hops into town tonight! Champlin has been performing under this moniker for a while now, wearing a bunny costume onstage, as well as using a wide variety of unusual props and apparel to augment his performance, such as panties, wigs, and fireworks. He has a big following internationally, and this show is expected to be well attended. The Pow Wows and Act Casual will get the party started.
The Shop Under Parts & Labour (1566 Queen Street) 9PM $8

COMEDY | Spare Hearts Improv: Baggage Claim
Everyone has some "baggage", a love story gone awry, or a friendship dissolved for whatever reason... The improv crew at Spare Hearts wants to hear about it. They will use your stories as material for improvisation and put together a bit of custom comic theatre for you, right on the spot. Your hosts tonight will be Sondra Piea and Geoff MacDonald, and the talents of Anwar Ali, Carolyn Williamson, Tanya Morgan and William Nishri will be featured. It will feel great to unload your baggage, and see it put to good use!
Free Times Cafe (320 College Street) 8PM $6
