Radar: Sheezer, The Birth of Big Air, Best Friends in Comedy Tour, WACK MAGIC, Sublime with Rome, Crowded House
MUSIC | Sheezer
Weezer are definitely making a comeback right now. They just announced that their new album, which will be released next month on Epitaph after their seven year deal with Geffen Recs. People are also calling their set at this years Osheaga festival one of the best of the fest. As great as this is, none of it applies to Sheezer, Toronto's all girl Weezer cover band featuring members of The Hidden Cameras and The Bicycles, who will be playing songs from classics Pinkerton and The Blue Album tonight at The Garrison. Stick around afterwards when DJ Mike SMall and DJ VJ BJ will be spinning a few of the best, but mostly the worst, songs from the 90's. The 90's are so in right now!!
The Garrison, 1197 Dundas St W, $8, 10pm
FILM | The Birth of Big Air
Mat Hoffman is easily the most well known figure in the world of BMX. Whether you played his video games or watched his endless number of tapes, you know he reinvented the game and is known as the "Evil Knevil of our time." He's been a little out of the game lately though after he nearly lost his arm a few years ago when a truck hit him. But pals Johnny Knoxville and Spike Jonze have teamed up to make a documentary about his legendary quest to get the most air on his bike, which involved a two-story high ramp that sent him flying over 50 feet. Premiers tonight at The Royal as part of the Bicycle Film Festival.
The Royal, 608 College St, $10, 7pm
COMEDY | Best Friends in Comedy Tour
Toronto has a great comedy scene, but it's on the small side. So I can understand if you're a little tired of seeing the same people every week. Perfect timing then that the Best Friends in Comedy Tour is making its stop in Toronto tonight. This tour is made up of James Harris, Greg Stone, Anthony DeVito (not sure if there any relation to Danny DeVito, you'll have to ask him), and John Szeluga, all big names in the NYC alt scene. You're not completely out of the woods yet though. Local Chris Locke will host, but don't worry he's funny. If you don't trust me, watch this video he recently made.
Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St W, $6, 10:30pm
PARTY | WACK MAGIC
A lot of different music accompanies dance parties - hip hop, electro, punk, 90's pop - but not often do you get a big group of sweaty people getting down to psychedelic. Well, you'll see that tonight at Double Double Land for the second edition of Wack Magic. DJs Rob Gordon and Daniel Vila will spin all forms of psych, much of which you've probably never heard of. Doors aren't until 11:30 and there are rumours of a free pants-check, so expect things to get all kinds of sweaty.
Double Double Land, 209 Augusta Ave, $5, 11:30pm
MUSIC | Sublime with Rome
The Kool Haus will no doubt be seeping with weed smoke tonight as the newly (re)formed Sublime (with Rome) takes the stage. Known mostly for their acceptance in the stoner community, Sublime still manage to be one of the most successful ska-punk bands of all time with their songs in constant radio rotation. This will be their first tour under the name Sublime with Rome, with a new singer after original frontman Bradley Nowell died from a heroin overdose in 1996. Seems like something to celebrate!
Kool Haus, 132 Queens Quay E, $42.50, 7pm
GALLERY | Crowded House
While the exhibition has been open for a few days now, tonight is the opening party for Crowded House - a collective of artists and illustrators. The show is made up of portraits from nine different Canadian artists, designed to form the representation of "a crowd." The thought of big crowds on their own gives me anxiety, let alone this - I won't be there, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be!
The Baitshop Gallery, 358 Dufferin, 7-11pm
