IN THE NEWS
Bloor Cinema hosting Music on Film series
Music and film are two forms of art that go together like peas and carrots, to quote the great Forrest Gump. Starting next Monday (October 21), the Bloor Cinema will be hosting a new film and speaker series called Music on Film: A Celebration of Music in Four Acts. For four weeks, a different music documentary will screen every Monday evening, followed by a post-screening discussion with scholars and musicians that will be moderated by Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of the Music Arts at The Royal Conservatory.
The films will include Wagner & Me, The Last Song Before The War, Jazz on a Summer's Day, and Pianomania. These are four very different documentaries about four very different genres of music, so this series should offer a little something for everyone. For more information on the films, and to purchase tickets, head on over to the Bloor Cinema's official site.
THIS WEEK'S HOT TICKETS
TUESDAY OCTOBER 15 / TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB / DANFORTH MUSIC HALL / 147 DANFORTH / $35 - $55 / ALL AGES
In my opinion, this is one of the must-see concerts of the fall. But I'm an absolutely huge fan of Two Door Cinema Club, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Believe me when I say, though, that this Northern Irish indie rock trio is one of the best live acts that you could ever hope to see. Their music is fast paced and infectious, they have an awesome stage presence, and it's just a rocking fun time overall. And the ticket prices are quite reasonable. Give this one a look.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 19 / SKYDIGGERS / ELGIN & WINTER GARDEN THEATRE / 189 YONGE / $29.50 - $39.50 / ALL AGES
If you're not familiar with local roots rockers Skydiggers, chances are that I don't care for you as a person. In all seriousness, this band has been remarkably consistent since releasing their self-titled debut album back in 1990, and their most recent release, a cover album featuring songs by a number of Canadian songwriters, was one of my favourite albums this year. As the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre just celebrated its centennial anniversary (hb!), this will be a great way to spend a Saturday night.
