The Joy Formidable

Hot Ticket: The Joy Formidable, Say Anything & Motion City Soundtrack co-headline, Bellevue CD release party, The Wooden Sky w/ Yukon Blonde, Violens, Sara Bareilles & Cary Brothers, The Autumn Defense

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3 through TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2010.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3 / THE JOY FORMIDABLE / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $15 / 19+
From across the Atlantic comes North Wales band, The Joy Formidable, who will be playing the Horseshoe tonight in one of their few stops in Canada during their North American tour. The three-piece indie pop band just released a new 7" last month entitled I Don't Want To See You Like This and are set to release a full-length record early next year. Opening up the night will be New York indie rockers, The Dig.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 4 / SAY ANYTHING & MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / $24.50 / ALL AGES
It'll be a night of pop punk, mixed with a little bit of nostalgia, when Sat Anything, Motion City Soundtrack, and Saves the Day take over the Sound Academy on Thursday night. Motion City Soundtrack are still touring their latest release, My Dinosaur Life, while Say Anything and Saves the Day both have new full-lengths out on a to be announced date in 2011. However, all three bands have been offering great setlist's featuring their back catalog on this tour.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 5 / BELLEVUE / SILVER DOLLAR / 486 SPADINA AVE / $5 / 19+
Colourful and catchy pop rockers, and recent blogTO Indie Exclusive featured artist, Bellevue, play the Silver Dollar on Friday in celebration of their third album What You Want. This is the official CD release party, so you can get admission for $5 or admission plus the record for $10.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 6 / THE WOODEN SKY / LEE'S PALACE / 529 BLOOR ST W / $15 / 19+
The Wooden Sky play the final date of their North American tour with Yukon Blonde on Saturday at Lee's Palace. This hometown show promises to be an excellent night of music before the boys head off to Europe and, even after seeing them several times this year, is one show I've personally been looking forward to. The Wooden Sky never seem to disappoint live and, with the addition of Yukon Blonde as well as These United States, this is definitely one you don't want to miss.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 7 / VIOLENS / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN ST W / $10 / 19+
NYC new-wavers, who include members from the now-defunct like-minded act Lansing-Dreiden, Violens take the stage at the Drake Hotel on Sunday, looking to captivate the audience with their psychedelic sounds in support of their recent release Amoral, which came out November 2.

MONDAY NOVEMBER 8 / SARA BAREILLES / PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE ST / $22.50 / ALL AGES
Perhaps best classified as a "guilty pleasure," Sara Bareilles, whom I don't personally feel all that guilty about, brings her pop (with some soul) tunes to the Phoenix on Monday. This talented singer-songwriter plays with the equally talented Cary Brothers, a favourite amongst prime time TV drama soundtracks, and Holly Conlan.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9 / THE AUTUMN DEFENSE / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN ST W / $15 / 19+
The side project of Wilco's John Stirratt and Patrick Sansone, the Autumn Defense offer a little bit of a softer folk sound to their primary band, but will no doubt deliver undeniably good tunes when they hit the Drake Hotel on Tuesday night in support of their latest LP Once Around. The duo describes the bands sound as something that "embraces and resists the moods of autumn", making this a perfect show to say goodbye to fall to as we welcome the colder months of winter.
