The Imperative

The Imperative is Toronto’s 100% all-vegan shop. Products skew more towards style, housewares and beauty products than actual groceries, but it’s a one-stop shop for those who realize that many things in our lives that don’t even taste delicious unnecessarily use animal products.

Ecorazzi is the umbrella company that runs a popular website on veganism, and also created the Vegan Food and Drink Festival as well as Doomie’s not far away from The Imperative in Parkdale. The store is named for the moral imperative they believe we have to make ethical choices that have a low impact on the earth we live on.

When you first walk in you’re greeted by a wall featuring the words “All vegan everything,” and they’ve predicted the inevitable with a dedicated selfie station. This messaging continues throughout the shop with chalkboards and neon spelling out phrases like “Look killer without killing” and “Vegan looks good on you.”

They even have a giant mural (created by @thecrazyplatelady) behind the cash of "Vegandale," their vision of the vegan world of tomorrow. Animals roam freely along the streets of Toronto in harmony with humans past "Veganbucks" and "Pizza Vizza."

Messaging continues on graphic tees, and they have stickers and other smaller products as well. Phrases are printed on American Apparel’s F496 sweater ($44.99), a Canadian company with ethical practices.

They have a ton of sumptuous vegan leather in their apparel section as well, from designers like Cara Cheung and Fashion Nova. A leather crop tee ($139.99) features a cool cut-out design resembling lettering.

The Vegan Collection makes leather wallets ($35.99) that are super sturdy and practical, an antidote to non-leather wallets that unfortunately tend to fall apart much faster than leather ones.

Vegan tees ($25.99) continue with unapologetic branding, perfect for a gift for that vegan in your life that’s always kicking ass and taking names or as a way to support this vegan store and all their endeavours and let everyone know your moral are even higher than your heels.

Natura Soy hand pours soy candles ($22) and proves with scents like black absinthe that vegan scented candles don’t have to be all about patchouli and nag champa if that’s not necessarily your thing.

The shop is actually two floors, and the basement is a vegan shoe room featuring men’s and women’s styles. There are also undies and accessories like hats and wallets down here. The Imperative is easy to spot from a marquee identical to the one that hangs above Doomie’s.
