The Other Side of Hope at Nordic Nights

An award winning classic The Other Side of Hope (Toivon tuolla puolen) by veteran Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki screening at Nordic Nights online over zoom.

Kaurismäki is known for his minimalistic films where his actors come up with the most subtle of expressions to convey stories of outsiders. Not without humour - of which Kaurismäki himself has said: "Well... I think the more pessimistic I feel about life, the more optimistic the films should be... "

Khaled, a Syrian refugee, lands by happenstance in Helsinki and counters the good and bad of humanity in trying to find his way in life.

Aki Kaurismäki won best director at the Berlinale when the film came out in 2017 and also received the FIPRESCI Critics’ Grand Prix award, among others.
