Penumbra is a collective jazz trio based out of Toronto whose sound is steeped equally in the jazz, classical and free music traditions. The band navigates seamlessly through composed and improvised material, able to turn on a dime from borderline chamber music to reckless abandonment of form and order. 2017 was spent writing and preparing new material for their debut EP set for release in 2018. Penumbra is comprised of Yunjin Claire Lee on Piano, Hayden Farrar on bass and Eric West on drums.

// Avesta Nakhaei

Born in Isfahan Iran, 1986. Learned violin from uncle, late Ali Kayvani and piano from his son composer/pianist Pejman Kayvani. After immigration to Canada, pursued music and studied with Trichy Sankaran, Bill Westcott, David Lidov, Casey Sokol, Steve Koven, Brian Katz, took some Iranian setar lessons with Ahmad Ashraf-Abadi, and came into spiritual contact and friendship with master drummer Jack Vorvis, with whom I share a similar free approach toward musical flow and rhythm. Played, composed together, and bonded deeply with Chris Weatherstone, D Alex Meeks, and many others. I love Beethoven, music of nature, Iranian classical music, singers Pavarotti, Shajarian, Taj Esfahani, Parissa, etc. Piano influences include Aziza Mustafazadeh and Keith Jarrett.
