What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual form of therapy which emphasizes the relationship between the structure and function of the human body. This therapy follows a belief in the body’s ability to self-heal and self-regulate.It is a profession that makes extensive use of manual assessment and treatment, guided by osteopathic principles. Osteopaths are functional anatomists who use manual therapy. They find the health, rather than focus on disease. Osteopathic treatment works to restore proper body mechanics, nerve impulses and the circulation of body fluids.

About Sandy Antunes:

As an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner, Sandy’s greatest passion is to inspire hope in her patients. She believes that Classical Osteopathy is about more than a musculoskeletal treatment – it’s about creating the right environment for change in the body.

Sandy is renowned for approaching her practice with compassion, warmth and an empathetic ear. Through focusing primarily on the individual, and while taking their assessment into consideration, she helps her patients achieve their health goals in a holistic and balanced way.

Sandy is a graduate of the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy, with a Master of Osteopathic Manipulative Science. She is a member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association and the Institute of Classical Osteopathy.

Before launching a successful private practice in 2004, Sandy spent five years working at a clinic alongside various health care professionals – physicians, massage therapists, chiropractors and physiotherapists – to create the most effective treatment plan for patients. She also has twenty years of hands-on patient experience under her belt from practicing Shiatsu therapy, later evolving her career into osteopathy.

With a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, Sandy is strongly committed to growing her knowledge base. As such, she is a highly-respected anatomy and physiology teacher (at the Eight Branches Academy of Eastern Medicine), and an international lecturer for the Institute of Classical Osteopathy (Britain). Her ongoing role in the osteopathic community extends to being a director for the Society for Osteopathic Wellness and a guest speaker for high-schools, organizations and special interest groups.

Outside of her practice, Sandy loves being active outdoors, enjoying good food and going to the theatre. She’s also an avid traveler who is always on the lookout for her next adventure.
